"Shadow of
Truth"
Star Trek: Frontier
reviewed by Fred Dixon
Star Trek: Frontier is a CGI animated production about the captain and crew of the Federation dreadnought U.S.S. Star League. It was produced by, written by, and stars the voice of R.S. Swope. In fact, it seems to be a Swope family affair as they voice other characters along with what seems to be computer vocalizations.
On the positive side, this effort does not reference the original show at all. To me, that is a big plus in fan productions. The voiceover work is mostly good with the exception of the computer vocalizations--they are somewhat halting. The starships are decently rendered. The sound effects and music are done competently as well. It is also nice to see that a cure for small breasts has been discovered by the 23rd Century as all the women are well endowed (I say this with tongue in cheek). This production also seems to have been prescient as it is "dedicated to the memeory (sic) of J. Edwards." This show was uploaded to Youtube back in 2007 and former Senator John Edwards self inflicted marital woes surfaced just last week (this review was written on 8/15/08). A little bit of a pleasant surprise.
I found watching this show to be painful. The jerky CGI animation is on the video game level of the Sims without the higher resolution. The editing is choppy. The starships do not move in frame. The renderings just sit there. There are some amusements - a coat rack is the captains ready room and there are curtains on windows in the crew quarters.
The story, "Shadow of Truth", is bland. A Federation destroyer is taken over by Orion pirates. They attack a Klingon ship. The Star League mounts a rescue of the Klingons and together they take the destroyer back from the Orions. Not much there. We dont get much insight into the characters except for the well endowed third in command. We learn of her Orion/Andorian heritage and perhaps some abuse in her background. One of the main concepts of TOS was the inner conflict of the characters - Kirks need to show perfection in command and his Human failings, Spocks human/Vulcan sides, McCoys gruff exterior with a soft heart, etc. We get none of this here. The characters are as two dimensional as the CGI renderings.
I appreciate the work fans put into their films. Productions of any quality require significant amounts of work. However, "Shadow of Truth" was difficult to watch. I give the concept a B, the execution a C, the story a D, the voiceover work a B-, and the animation a D. You can find Star Trek: Frontier on Youtube.
