Price Trek
December 5th 2007
The new HD-DVD editions of the original Star Trek series are now available, and at a hefty $194.99 per season (Amazon has it for $132.99), but, folks, this is ridiculous. Even if you love the original series as much as I, it's almost criminal for CBS-Paramount to come out with yet another version of the episodes (adding special effects that are somewhat superior to the original ones) at such an unbelievable price. The complete first season of the popular show, Lost, is a whopping $59.99. The reimaged Battlestar Galactica first season is $59.98 ($99.99 on HD-DVD). The first season of Seinfeld is $49.95.
So what is CBS-Paramount thinking? First of all, they realize that the original series is superior in terms of fan support, and they're going to milk it dry if they can. Why do you think the next movie is a features characters from the original Star Trek? They know where the money's at, and they know that Modern Trek has failed fandom. They hope to recapture past glories by reimaging the original series.
As often as TPTB spoke poorly of the original series, I find it ironic that it's considered the hot property of Trek lore. I just wish they didn't charge so damn much for the Trek that I love, and I wish that fans would have the sense to say "No!" to this sort of price gouging.
