Politics and Star Trek

One of the toughest things that I have to do as the editor-in-chief and publisher for ORION PRESS, both its fanzines and its websites, is keeping my big mouth shut. My political views are not going to be put on display here; they're my views, and they don't have to be yours. We're all entitled to them, but expressing them here just seems inappropriate. Star Trek is a way of getting away from it all, pure escapism, if you will.

But lately I've been distressed by the increasing number of fans who use their Star Trek websites as bully pulpits, advocating either liberal or conservative agendas, attacking either side's politicians. Even the Star Trek stars themselves have gotten into the act, and frankly, it's sad. While I have no problem with folks having differing opinions, I do have a problem with the bitterness, cruelty and outright nastiness of folks who have nothing more to do than attack rather than advocate.

This hatefulness is not something I want to see in Star Trek fandom, and it's my greatest hope that we can all put away our differences or at least respect them for what they are.

Yours in IDIC,

Randy
