Creation Con Gets Slammed by nuTrek Actors
From the Creation Con Website:
September 17, 2009
For many months we've been trying to develop a great guest line-up for this convention consisting of cast members from the new Star Trek movie. Unfortunately to date we have been unable to lock any of these guest contracts down and we do not want to present an event that would be less than what our audience expects of us. Therefore we have made the decision to postpone this convention until such time as we can successfully present some of the new Star Trek stars in Los Angeles. We do thank the loyal fans that have already signed up for this convention and offer the following options to them...
When I first heard this news, I thought it was some bashing attempt from some fans who have issues with either nuTrek or Creation. Turns out, it's true. The Creation group wasn't able to get any of the stars of the nuTrek movie to commit to their Grand Slam convention. This is, frankly, utterly shocking. Creation puts on a good convention; it's not my personal preference, but fans get what they want. Talks with the actors, souvenirs, autographs (if they choose), and so on. We've had dealers tables at many of their events over the years, and I've never had any problem with them. I think they're to be commended for all the devotion they've shown to Classic Trek for the past four decades.
One of the reasons why the original Star Trek series was so enduring was that the conventions which sprang up around it helped perpetuate the series. Fans could go to a convention, meet Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley, etc., get their autographs. Hell, I even had a drink with Jimmy Doohan at one of the Space Treks in St. Louis!
It seems as though the cast of nuTrek has failed to realize how important the fans are. The folks at Serenity/Firefly, Stargate and Twilight haven't made this mistake; they're out there reaching out to their fans, strengthening their fan base, promoting the hell out of their projects. Joss Whedon has figured it out. J.K. Rowling knows. Apparently, the folks now in charge at Paramount don't realize the value of reaching out to their fans.
Of course, this should come as no surprise. The folks at Pocketbooks have said that fandom doesn't matter. I guess J.J. Abrams and his cast feel the same way...
