Our Heroes in Space
| Major Matthew "Matt"
Mason commanding officer ReconoJet 1 Space Sled 1
This 1966 figure was completely repainted with acrylic paint and had the left knee and both elbows rewired completely. |
|
Major Matt Mason is on patrol. |
| Captain Tomas Gonzalez executive officer UniTred 9 CatTrac 1 This figure is a LeadWorks original reproduction. If only their boots were properly proportioned to be used in the Space Station, I would highly recommend them. |
|
Gonzales travels to a work site. |
| Captain Jonathan Gordon chief science officer Space Crawler 5 Space Sled 2 This figure is a LeadWorks original reproduction. I think the glossy look is a bit much, and I wish they'd altered the head design for each figure instead of simply changing the color of the paints. |
|
Space Crawler handles sandy terrain. |
| Lieutenant Doug Davis physicist Space Crawler 6 Space Sled 3 This figure's knees, thighs and shoulders were completely rewired. He originally had been painted by the Seller, and it took three coats of acrylic to lessen the sticky feel. I'm still not happy with it, and I may end up stripping all the paint and starting over. |
|
Doug prefers crawlers to ReconoJets. |
| Lieutenant Jeff Long planetologist SpaceSled 2
This figure arrived without legs, and it took the sacrifice of a Major Matt Mason to restore him with a 'cloned' set. All wires were replaced, and I used tire patch epoxy to reattach the legs. |
|
Jeff recently modified the Star Seeker. |
| Lieutenant Maria Melendez geologist PowerSuit 1 This figure was originally a Matt Mason. All wires were replaced, and the head was exchanged for a modified head from a Star Trek: First Contact 6" Deanna Troi action figure. The hair had to be clipped off considerably, and her new head won't fit into a helmet, but since she's always in PowerSuit One or in the command center, it doesn't really matter. This character was created for my daughter who didn't want to miss out on the fun the boys were having! |
|
Melendez has discovered crystals. |
| Sergeant Stephen Storm security officer Astro Trac 1
This figure was probably in the best shape of all those that I have purchased. There was considerable paint loss, which I touched up using acrylic paint. |
|
Stormy heads out to the dig site. |
| Sergeant Mae Gordon chemist Space Sled 3 This figure was originally a Matt Mason. All wires were replaced, and the head was exchanged for a modified head from a Star Trek: First Contact 6" Lillie action figure. The neck had to be clipped off considerably, but her new head fits nicely into a helmet. This character was created for my daughter who didn't want to miss out on the fun the boys were having! |
|
Mae performs an experiment. |
| Sergeant Ishiro Kandagawa transportation officer CatTrac 3
Obviously, this figure is a repainted Matt Mason. The paint was almost completely missing from the figure, and it took two coats of primer before I could apply three coats of acrylic paint. His wirtes were completely replaced as well. |
|
Ishiro performs some maintenance. |
| Sergeant Daniel Friedman communications officer CatTrac 5
This figure is a LeadWorks original reproduction. I think this figure is probably the best looking of the four produced by that company. Note the flag pattern is completely wrong. |
|
Friedman receives a message. |
| Corporal Sandeep Vijay life support officer CatTrac 4 Obviously, this figure is a repainted Matt Mason. The paint was almost completely missing from the figure, and it took a coat of primer before I could apply two coats of acrylic paint. His wirtes were completely replaced as well. You'll noticed that I gave him a faintly olive complexion by rubbing a mixture of yellow and green paints over his face. |
|
Vijay adjusts the oxygen levels. |
| Corporal Ian McBain engineering officer Moonsuit 3 This figure was originally a Matt Mason. All wires were replaced, and the head was exchanged for a modified head from a Star Trek: First Contact 6" Zefrem Cochrane action figure. The neck and cap had to be clipped off considerably, and his new head won't fit into a helmet, but since he's always in MoonSuit Three or in the command center, it doesn't really matter. This character was created for my daughter who didn't want to miss out on the fun the boys were having! |
|
Ian works on the Space Beacon. |
| Corporal Carla Romano medical officer SpaceSled 5 This figure was originally a Matt Mason. All wires were replaced, and the head was exchanged for a modified head from a Star Trek: First Contact 6" Beverly Crusher action figure. The hair had to be clipped off considerably, and her new head won't fit into a Major Matt Mason helmet, but it fits nicely into the helmet which came with a Star Trek: First Contact 6" Jean-Luc Picard. This character was created for my daughter who didn't want to miss out on the fun the boys were having! |
|
Carla is en route to a work site. |
| Corporal Nathaniel Davis weapons officer Firebolt Space Cannon 3
This figure is a LeadWorks original reproduction. This is the second best one, in terms of "look," but it really is far too glossy to photograph well. These figures do fit nicely into the vehicles, though, including those with boot locks. |
|
Davis arms the Space Cannon. |
| Corporal Hans Pijper astronomer Space Bubble 9 This was a figure in great shape except for the paint completely missing on its back. Getting the hair color and the mustache just right was the greatest challenge. There's two coats of a darker brown paint underneath, with a single coat of a medium brown layer on top of it, and a faint touch here and there of a light brown for frosting. |
|
Hans hitches a ride from Nathaniel. |
A Few More Notes:
You've probably noticed that I've made these figures part of a United States Space Exploration Force instead of a team of United Nations members. I started out to do just that, but when the World Trade Center complex was destroyed, I changed my mind about that. You'll note, though, that the figures represent the great melting pot that makes America strong.
Some folks will no doubt have an hissy fit about the modifications made to the figures, especially in terms of the repainting, rewiring and re-heading of various Matt Masons. None of the Matt Masons modified, however, were in decent shape. Only two figures had most of their wires intact, but most had to be rewired completely. Given my intent is to share part of my own childhood with my children, amd given that they themselves picked the names and colors of these "extra" characters, I hope we can be forgiven. And if not, well, to heck with you!
| Captain Lazer 12' tall defense robot Laser eyes, beacon and wand. Solar chest. Discovered on the moon by Matt Mason. This is a really nice figure I used the Buy-It-Now! option to obtain. The attachments (beacon, wand and moon shoes) came in a giant lot I recently purchased. You'll note I made some changes to the character's official role in MMM. |
|
Captain Lazer approaches. |
| Captain Steel 10' tall construction robot Incredible lifting capabilities. Solar chest. Discovered on the moon by Matt Mason. This figure is a reworked Silver
Surfer using parts from a scrapped Captain Lazer. |

| Callisto alien clones from one of the moons of Jupiter They seek to thwart Humankind's exploration of the solar system.
I have a growing number of these guys who you'll probably remember advertised as being Matt's friend. *snort* Well, I never played that way. :) |
|
The Callisto use stolen technology in an attack on the Lunar Base! |
| Scorpio alien warrior rumored to be from Titan, one of Saturn's moons He seeks the absolute destruction of Humanity and the Callisto.
My collection's Scorpio is stll in need of a head. If anyone's got an extra Scorpio head, I'm more than willing to pay a fair price for it. |
|
Unfortunately, there are no survivors or witnesses to Scorpio's latest attrocity: the destruction of the Lunar Orbital Platform. |
